Gator saw Izzy coming toward him, and he took one last gulp of his coffee and tucked his phone back into the back pocket of his jeans. She spied him and continued toward him until she happened to glance across the street to a café. She slowed, then completely stopped and stared. Gator closed the distance between them.

“What’s up?” He followed her line of vision to find a lot of suits dining. Not really sure what had made her stop, then his eyes narrowed when he saw the two men in bulky suit coats standing outside, watching. Definitely bodyguards. What was she getting into now?

“I need a minute.”

Since she didn’t choose to elaborate, Gator followed her across the street, intending to keep her in sight.

She went to enter the café, but the two men blocked the door. He saw a man wave at them from inside. They parted and let her pass, and she made a beeline for a table in the back where two men were cloistered, including the one who had waved them through. When she came up to the table, the waving man spied her and scowled briefly before putting on a neutral face.

The man stood and extended a well-manicured hand. He was too pretty to be called handsome, almost delicate in both features and build, but deceptively so. He was rapier-thin, and honed, tall, swarthy, and wearing a very expensively tailored suit. He reminded Gator of Captain Jack Sparrow with a carefully concealed sharp wit, that in another life he would have been a swashbuckler. “Ambassador Theriot, what a pleasure to see you in DC. I thought you’d taken up your post in Niger…wasn’t it?” His accent was thick and Russian, but his English was impeccable.

She made room so that Gator could move in next to her. “Ambassador Aleksei Volkov, allow me to introduce a friend of mine, Petty Officer Zephirin LaBauve.”

Gator accepted the man’s handshake. They were close to the same age, matched in height and build, except Volkov had long, dark curls much too contained for the man’s personality and cunning, dark gray eyes, whereas Gator had brown eyes and hair. He seemed way too young to be a Russian ambassador.

Volkov shook his hand strongly, without any overt power play. Gator hadn’t expected anything so obvious anyway. Volkov nodded to his dining companion across the table, who hadn’t bothered to stand as Izzy approached. “Allow me to introduce Leonid Olenska.” The name went through Gator like an electric shock. Ruthless oligarch, richer than hell, with cars, yachts, penthouses and villas, women at his beck and call. The man was dressed to the max in all designer clothes. He didn’t add anything else, but Gator didn’t require further information and was betting Izzy had done her homework as well. In the ugly underside of the world’s blackest pits, it was rumored that Olenska dabbled in guns, drugs, and prostitution, along with something so deep and dark, no one could be encouraged to talk about it, the fear embedded.
